A medical products company grappled with the need to control Ethylene Oxide (ETO) emissions from two sterilizers. ETO is toxic, carcinogenic, flammable and explosive. The blend of ETO and Freon (88/12) used to maintain a non-explosive mix was becoming extremely expensive, due to Freon phase out. Conventional ETO control was based on acid scrubbing, with periodic recharging and waste disposal.

A unique thermal oxidizer system was developed for this client. This oxidizer system allowed the company to eliminate Freon, for a significant cost savings. The oxidizer was designed to integrate with the sterilizer and its computer control system, for automatic, “transparent” operation, without change to previous operations. The system safely and automatically controls emissions without chemicals or waste disposal.

This project was completed on a design/build basis by our engineers, on schedule, at fixed cost, and in full compliance with State regulators. Our permitting staff negotiated the construction and operating permits, providing dispersion modeling and effects review analyses.

We stand ready to apply our experience, knowledge, and creativity to solve your company’s problems as well.
