Three Flue Stack System: About
Turner EnviroLogic supplies engineered exhaust stacks for industrial and power applications. Shown above is a 31′-6″ dia insulated stack that stands 130′ tall. Inside the stack are three uninsulated stainless steel flues that carry the exhaust gases from three GE LM6000 power generating combustion turbines. Due to architectural reasons at the site the three flues were required to be enclosed in a common outer shell. Initially each of the flues were specified to be insulated with an uninsulated outer shell. This would have made access for emissions sampling extremely difficult and potentially dangerous. Turner EnviroLogic’s solution was to insulate the outer shell leaving the individual flues uninsulated and to allow emissions sampling from the top roof platform of the outer shell. A 360 degree platform is accessed from an enclosed ladder with multiple rest platforms in accordance with ASTM specifications. The insulated roof of the outer shell is made from checker plate providing safe access to the emissions test ports built into the individual flues.
The outer shell is fabricated into arc sections that are pre-insulated at the factory with 2″ thick insulation and a floating stainless steel liner held in place with studs welded on 12″ centers to the inner surface of the outer shell. These arc sections are easily assembled at the job site using bolted flanges. Significant field labor savings resulted since there is no field welding required to erect the stack shell. It was not necessary to go inside the outer shell to apply strips of insulation and liner plates at the seams as Turner EnviroLogic’s unique insulation and floating liner system allowed for a thermal block at the arc section flanged edges when the sections were bolted together.
Three Flue Stack System: Installation
Note: assembly performed by a third party specified by the client. Turner EnviroLogic provided on-site support as needed. Field welding to erect the stack shell was eliminated with the use of bolted flanges, along with a simple design for fast assembly.
